In this three-part series of articles, I’ll look back at 2024, highlight my predictions for 2025, and offer suggestions on how warehouse leaders can use these emerging trends and key observations to plan for success.
Looking back at 2024, it’s exciting to see that mobile automation is the increasingly favored solution in warehousing for its faster ROI, lower costs, quick deployment, and higher throughput than traditional fixed automation infrastructure. Businesses continued to navigate uncertain demand and volatile labor markets in 2024 and gravitated towards warehouse automation solutions that can adapt in real-time. Autonomous robots emerged as the leading choice, offering scalability and flexibility that large, fixed infrastructure cannot match.
Market data from Interact Analysis indicates that this strategic shift to mobile automation is accelerating. The industry is swiftly moving away from static, one-size-fits-all approaches toward mobile systems that seamlessly adapt to fluctuating demands. That future is arriving faster than anyone anticipated.
As the world leader in mobile automation, 2024 has been an exciting year for Locus. We advanced our LocusONE™ platform by launching LocusHub, providing clients with advanced analytics and AI tools to monitor real-time performance, optimize resource allocation, and manage labor more effectively.
We also introduced our next generation of Vector as part of our LocusONE™ platform. Locus Vector directly responds to customer feedback for greater versatility, heavier payloads, and configuration options. Vector works seamlessly alongside Locus Origin in a single fleet to address multiple use cases for additional flexibility. Vector is CE-certified and available to our European customers.
In 2024, our Customer Success Team was expanded to deploy sites faster, improve on-site maintenance, and deliver enhanced 24/7 support.
These developments position us to continue leading in mobile warehouse automation, meeting our customers' evolving needs and driving the industry toward a more flexible and intelligent future.
Redefining Warehousing: Flexibility and Throughput
Locus achieved the extraordinary milestone of over 4 billion picks across our global customer sites in 2024. This accomplishment underscores the reliability, flexibility, and throughput capabilities of our AI-enabled LocusONE™ platform. Each of these billions of picks translates into significant customer cost savings.
The Locus PeakFLEX program exemplifies Locus's core strategic advantages: Unmatched Flexibility and Unlimited Throughput. In 2024, this program enabled warehouses to meet their SLAs even as order volumes surged dramatically during the peak season. By deploying nearly 2,000 additional bots through the PeakFLEX program, we empowered our customers to scale their operations dynamically, ensuring higher throughput precisely when needed.
The Rise of Intelligent Warehouses: Transforming Logistics with AI
Over the next two to three years, flexibility will become the standard in today’s warehousing as more companies switch from fixed automation to mobile solutions. In the future, intelligence will set the truly high performers apart. Instead of relying solely on basic KPIs like picks per hour, modern warehouse leaders require granular, real-time data to optimize staffing and workflows. This evolution has progressed faster than anyone anticipated.
In 2024, warehouse operators experienced the transformative potential of AI and machine learning in revolutionizing operations. At Locus, we've been at the forefront of AI long before it became a buzzword. Still, we took a significant leap forward this year, enhancing our technology stack to deliver even greater value.
With the launch of LocusHub and advancements to our AI-driven LocusONE™ platform, we empowered warehouses with real-time insights and advanced analytics to automate tasks, optimize routes, and maximize throughput. These innovations enable faster, insightful decision-making, driving fully data-centric operations.
LocusHub gives customers real-time visibility into labor allocation, productivity benchmarks, and operational performance. As data-driven optimization becomes the cornerstone of modern fulfillment, it’s clear that smarter, more intelligent warehouses are the future of logistics.
Over the next 12–24 months, we will significantly expand LocusHub’s capabilities, setting new benchmarks for intelligent automation and delivering more value to our customers.
Building the Future: Innovation, Versatility, and Next-Generation Solutions
Locus reached a milestone this year by constructing our state-of-the-art 160,000-square-foot corporate headquarters just north of Boston. This expansion underscores our commitment to innovation and the growing demand for data-driven, flexible robotics solutions.
More than just a new space, this headquarters elevates our R&D capabilities, enhances customer support, and positions us to attract the industry's brightest talent. It also serves as a demonstration center where customers and prospects can experience the transformative potential of our next-generation mobile automation solutions.
In the next few quarters, we anticipate introducing new innovative solutions and a steady stream of new functionality designed to further reduce reliance on manual labor, enhance workplace safety, and significantly boost throughput. These advancements will leverage cutting-edge robotics, AI-driven automation, and real-time data analytics.
Empowering Teams: Human and Robot Collaboration
One of the most surprising lessons of 2024 was the evolving perception of automation as a workforce ally rather than a competitor. Robots became indispensable teammates, augmenting their capabilities and reducing walking. While onsite at customer facilities, it’s rewarding to hear from floor associates how Locus has improved their lives and made their jobs easier and more rewarding.
One of the most impactful moments of this year came during a conversation with a floor associate in Memphis, TN. She shared that Locus had helped her "be the mother she always wanted to be." When I asked her to explain, she said that by reducing the amount she needed to walk during her shifts, Locus left her with enough energy at the end of the day to help her 12-year-old daughter with homework. A simple yet profound change that had transformed her self-worth.
As mobile manipulation becomes more feasible in the next few years, robots will handle more repetitive work, and human roles will evolve to focus on oversight, problem-solving, and strategic improvements. Upskilling will become a priority, with training programs equipping associates to manage automation systems and interpret data.
This upskilling movement came to life during a conversation with an associate at one of our 3PL accounts. He proudly described himself as a “data junkie” who had transformed his career trajectory, rising from an entry-level associate to becoming the Locus Champion at his site. Now responsible for managing the data and reporting from LocusONE™, he shared how mastering these skills not only boosted his confidence but also led to a well-deserved promotion. His journey is a testament to how new technology can empower individuals to grow and thrive in their roles.
A Personal Reflection: Inspiration, Innovation, and the Path Ahead
Reflecting on 2024, one of my most inspiring moments came when a 3PL client deployed a Locus solution in mere weeks, just before peak season. They picked, packed, and shipped within a few weeks at volumes they’d never reached.
It was a powerful reminder that with the right combination of people, technology, and a willingness to innovate, even the most daunting logistics challenges can be solved quickly. That level of collaboration, adaptability, and tangible impact made me feel incredibly optimistic about the future of warehouse automation.
At Locus, we’re proud of the milestones we achieved this year, each testament to the power of flexible, intelligent automation. As we enter 2025, our focus will continue to be on listening to our customers and innovating to address their challenges.
In the next part of this series, I’ll highlight my predictions for warehouses in 2025. Stay tuned.
